The mat is a shiny foam backed mat that rolls out flat onto the tabletop. It seems a little curled up and wrinkly when you first take it out of the case but once on a flat surface it flattens out perfectly.

King is 3 1/2 inches tall. The solid plastic pieces are double-weighted at the bottom. They don't knock over easily and their heft inspires confidence (well, for me anyway) as I make my attack.

Both black and white have two queens for those games where a pawn assumes the throne.

Square mat measures 20 inches per side. (24"=2 feet) so it offers a playing field that is relaxing to scan because spacious open ranks and squares are easier to contemplate.

Pieces are classic shapes so no mistaking rooks for bishops or bishops for pawns or kings for queens etc.

Has a canvas carrying case with a zipper closure at one end. to store the game or transport to chess club you roll up the mat, pour the pieces in, zip it closed. Case has a strap handle.
